Rekeying means your locks stay and your keys change. A master key system lets one key open every door you choose, while everyone else carries less.
When is a rekey the right call?
- A tenant, a roommate, or a worker left and the keys did not come back.
- You just bought or rented the place.
- The keys were lost or stolen.
- You want one key to work the top and bottom locks.
What do you actually do to the lock?
We pull the cylinder, swap the small pins inside so they match a new key, and put it back. It takes less work than a new lock, and nothing changes on the face of the door.
How do master keys work in a building?
Say a building has a street door, a basement, and twenty apartments. Each tenant's key opens their own door and the street door. The super's key opens the shared doors, and the owner decides what else it opens. We write it all down, so the next person who needs a key is not guessing.
How does the job go?
Tell us about the door on the phone, or text us a picture of it, and we give you a written quote before any work starts. We do the work, then you try the lock and the keys yourself before we leave.
Common questions
Can you do this floor by floor?
Yes. Plenty of owners start with the shared doors and add the rest over time.
Will my current locks work?
Some will. We check the cylinders you have and tell you which ones need changing.
Who can order a master key?
Only the owner or someone the owner names. Regular door keys can be copied at our shop inside Tejada Hardware.
